Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia. It is bordered by Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and has a coastline along the Caspian Sea. The land was formerly part of the Soviet Union, then named the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic.
The country is approximately 488,100 km ². The center of the country is dominated by plains in the Karakum Desert, which constitutes around 90% of the country's land area. The range Kopete Day, along the southwestern border, when 2912 m. Balkan Mountains to the west and Kugitang-row completely in the east are the only other upland areas in the country. Rivers include the Amu Darya and the Hari Rud. The climate is subtropical desert, with little rainfall. Winters are mild and dry with most rain between January and May. Most precipitation falls in Kopetdag-line. |
