Odense is Denmark's third largest and Funen's largest city. It is the administrative place of Odense Municipality located in Region of Southern Denmark. Until 1 January 2007, Odense also the administrative seat of the now defunct Funen county.

The cathedral contains four royal tombs: Canute the Holy Church which is named after Erik Lam - if exact burial place is unknown - and transferred from the grated Gråbrødrekirke King Hans and Christian II. Besides the first two died Frederik IV in the city, Odense Castle, which today is home to the municipal environmental and management techniques and Statsamtet Fyn.

In Odense, remains one of the six famous slave castles, nun ground.

The poet H.C. Andersen was born and raised in Odense. Industrialist C.F. Tietgen likewise.

In Odense is one of Denmark's largest shopping malls, Rosengårdcenteret, which has 125 stores in an indoor pedestrian environment.

Odense is a very old city, probably among the 4-5 oldest in Denmark. Outside the town nun Bakken viking castle, a trelleborg from about 1000 AD From another such fortress Aggesborg in North Jutland, fled King Knud in Odense in 1086 and was killed in Albani Church. Here he was canonized nicknamed Knud the Holy.
