Africa is the second largest continent in the world with its 30.3 million km2 of land. The climate is tropical, subtropical in the north and south. Africa has a number of overlapping cultures. The most conventional distinction is that between sub-Saharan Africa and the northern countries from Egypt to Morocco, who largely associate themselves with Arabic culture. In this comparison is considered the nations south of the Sahara to consist of many cultural areas, such as the Bantu language group.
Africa was originally the name of a Roman province which included the continent's northern mediterranean coast. Gradually it has become the name of the continent, including the areas Europeans called it the "darkest Africa", which was first fully explored from the 1800s. |
