The capital is The Valley. The island has an area of 102 km² and has about 13 000 inhabitants. Anguilla is the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles and was formerly part of the British Leeward Islands.

Anguilla was first settled by Indians from South America. The earliest traces of human derived from about 1300 BC, and traces of permanent settlement from about 600 AD It is uncertain when the island was discovered by Europeans. Some sources claim that Columbus saw the island in 1493, while others believe that it was first discovered by the French in 1564 or 1565. The name Anguilla is the word for eel in several Romance languages, probably chosen because of the island's eel elongated shape.

Anguilla was first colonized by English immigrants from St. Kitts about 1650. France took over the island in 1666, but ceded it back to England the following year the Treaty of Breda.
