Austral Islands is the southernmost group of islands in French Polynesia in the Pacific. Austral Islands is made up of two separate geographical island groups. To the Northwest lies the Tubuai Islands, which is named after the main island. They are made up from the Northwest of Rimatara, Rurutu,: Tubuai and Raivavae. In the South-East is located in the Bass Islands, which consists of the main island of Rapa Iti and the small islands Marotiri and Maria. There are also many smaller, uninhabited islands around several of the larger islands. Tubuaiøyene is used from time to time also as the name for the whole island group. Islands and also one of French Polynesia's five administrative provinces. The Capital of Austral Islands is Mataura in Tubuai.
